The Pit Boss Sportsman 820 Deluxe Pellet Grill lands at the top of the list thanks to its eight-in-one versatility, dial-in digital control board, and a bundle of extras.

As I said, this is an eight-in-one Pit Boss, which means that you can smoke, bake, braise, roast, grill, barbecue, char-grill, and sear all on one machine. What’s more this pellet grill also allows you to choose from instant direct or indirect temperatures with the pull of a lever.

What to cook low and slow? Not a problem. This pellet grill will hover at a steady 180 degrees Fahrenheit or soar to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

The digital control board is another shining feature. This allows you to lock in temperatures and set times. Plus, this system works in tandem with the included meat probes, which allow you to measure your cooking progress.

2. Pit Boss Pro Series 820 Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker – Best Overall Choice #2

PIT BOSS 71820FB PB820FB BBQ Pellet Grill and Smoker, 820 sq. in

View on Amazon

The Pit Boss Pro Series 820 Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker earns solid points for its sturdy construction, ample cooking space, and digital control panel.

I’m big on durability, so I like that this unit has a 16-gauge powder-coated stainless steel body. Crack the lid and you’ll find 820 square inches of cooking surface, porcelain-coated cast-iron grates.

This is an eight-in-one pellet grill, which means that you can smoke, bake, braise, roast, grill, barbecue, char-grill, and sear on it.

In total, you get 40,000 BTUs of firepower. If you’re looking for low and slow cooking capability, this unit will cook at a mild 180 degrees Fahrenheit. This pellet grill tops out at 500 degrees Fahrenheit, which is sufficient for most food cooked at my home.

This pellet grill is also extremely user-friendly. Just fill your hopper with wood pellets, press the auto start button, and dial in your temperature on the digital thermostat. This pellet grill does just about everything else for you.

When temperatures fluctuate, the grill’s circuitry kicks into gear and cycles the auger until the right temperature is achieved.

This setup unchains you from the grill station and allows you to mingle with your guests while your pellet grill does the work for you. Brilliant!

The Pit Boss Pro Series 820 Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker heats quickly, maintains temperatures, and basically does everything but chew your food. What’s not to love?

3. Pit Boss Classic 700 Sq. In. Wood Fired Pellet Grill w/ Flame Broiler

Pit Boss Classic 700 sq. in. Wood Fired Pellet Grill & Smoker, Smoke, Bake, Roast, Braise and BBQ

View on Amazon

The Pit Boss Classic 700 Sq. In. Wood Fired Pellet Grill w/ Flame Broiler is one of my favorite consumer-friendly Pit Boss grills.

This eight-in-one pellet grill is versatile as it is practical. The first thing you’ll notice is the handsome black and tan exterior and the classic barrel-top design. This setup not only looks sharp, but it’s also efficient and feels familiar.

Crack the hood and you’ll find 700 square inches of cooking space, porcelain-coated steel cooking grates, and a warming rack. While many pellet grill manufacturers claim that their carts rest on durable “all-terrain” wheels, I’m frequently left scratching my head.

Pit Boss, however, uses thin and sturdy wheels that look and feel almost like rollerblade wheels. These glide across the patio, won’t crack, and won’t break down under harsh weather.

This Pit Boss pellet grill is also incredibly easy to use. Just load up your hopper, select your cooking temperature on the digital control board (or use the standard flame broiler by sliding the plate to cook over an open flame), and get to work.

If you’re looking for a handsome design, ample cooking space, and a budget-friendly price, check out the Pit Boss Classic 700.

4. Pit Boss 1150G Navigator Series Pellet Grill

PIT BOSS PB1150G PG1150G Wood Pellet Grill w/Cover and Folding Front Shelf Included, Black

View on Amazon

The Pit Boss 1150G Navigator Series Pellet Grill is one of Pit Boss’s premium pellet grills, so it comes with a solid build, a smart system, and a lot of extra bells and whistles.

To start, this Pit Boss pellet grill is made from top-to-bottom steel. It’s sleek, but it’s also as sturdy as they come.

Crack the hood and you’ll find a massive 1,158 square inch cooking space spread out across porcelain-coated cast-iron cooking grates.

Remember, you control this eight-in-one pellet smoker from a digital control panel. This allows you to set temperatures and walk away knowing that your food is in good hands.

If temperatures fluctuate, the system senses it, cycles the auger, and adds more wood pellets to achieve the set temperature.

A bonus is that this pellet grill allows you to choose from direct or indirect temperatures with the pull of a lever. When cooking with pellets, this grill has a temperature range of 180-500 degrees Fahrenheit. However, it has an open flame capability of 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additional features include a custom Pit Boss grill cover, two meat probes, a 32-pound hopper,  and a pellet view window, which tells me how much fuel is left in the hopper.

Also worth a mention: Pit Boss 1150G is backed by a generous five-year warranty.

5. Pit Boss 340 Tailgater

Pit Boss Portable Tailgate/Camp With Foldable Legs Pellet Grill, Tan (340 sq. in.)

View on Amazon

Pellet grilling in a portable package? It does exist and the Pit Boss 340 Tailgater is proof.

When set up, this portable grill measures 40” X 22” X 41”. The beauty is that this pellet grill comes with collapsing legs for easy transport and storage. This Pit Boss clocks in at 93 pounds. So while it isn’t particularly light, it is far more road-ready than most wood pellet grills.

Crack the hood and you’ll find 340 square inches of cooking space and porcelain-coated cast-iron cooking grates. Essentially, the Pit Boss 340 Tailgater is a scaled-down version of the Pit Boss Classic 700. So while it’s half the size, it does share many of the same features.

These features include sturdy top-to-bottom steel construction and a sleek black and tan exterior with a barrel top.

As with all Pit Boss grills, this one is easy to use. Just load up your hopper, select the cooking temperature on the digital control board, and get to work. This unit heats quickly and maintains temperatures.

I also like that this pellet grill rests on sturdy rollerblade-style wheels. These glide across the patio, won’t crack, and won’t break down under harsh weather.

If you’re looking for handsome design, portability, and an affordable price tag, consider the Pit Boss 340 Tailgater.

6. Pit Boss 700FB Wood Fired Pellet Grill w/ Flame Broiler

PIT BOSS 700FB Pellet Grill, 700 sq. in.

Next up is the Pit Boss 700FB Wood Fired Pellet Grill w/ Flame Broiler, a mid-priced eight-in-one grill.

This Pit Boss pellet grill and smoker features 700 square inches of cooking space, porcelain-coated steel grates, and sturdy steel construction with a powder-coated finish to give it all-weather protection.

There’s a lot to love about this Pit Boss Pellet grill, particularly the smart digital control system, which does virtually all the work for you. Just load up your 21-pound hopper, dial in your temperature setting, and get to work.

This pellet grill also includes the Pit Boss flame broiler lever system, which allows you to achieve instant direct or indirect heat over a 1,000 degree Fahrenheit flame. When you stick to pellet cooking, you can lock in temperatures between 180-500 degrees Fahrenheit.

So this machine is fantastic for low and slow cooking and quick searing.

I like the open-cart design too. This pellet grill comes with two industrial-style wheels that are as unique as they are utilitarian. You’ll have no trouble rolling this 117-pound grill around the patio.

If you’re looking for an intuitive, well-rounded, and fairly-priced pellet grill, check out the Pit Boss 700FB Wood Fired Pellet Grill w/ Flame Broiler.

With six adjustable cooking racks at your disposal, you can cook just about anything including large roasts and full turkeys. And because this is a vertical smoker, you’re able to utilize every square inch of the cooking chamber simply by purchasing a set of heavy-duty meat hooks.

This pellet grill also comes with a bundle of extras. These include double-walled insulation to lock in heat and flavor and a large front window that allows you to check on your cooking progress without ever opening the door.

In total you get 1,000 square inches of cooking surface spread out over porcelain-coated grates and an additional warming rack.

There’s a lot to admire here. To start, this wood pellet grill looks fantastic. I like the classic barrel-top design and the two-tone “black and tan” exterior.

The open cart design is also a nice touch because there’s a massive bottom storage shelf and an additional side shelf with tool hooks. The locking casters and all-terrain wheels are also handy because this wood pellet grill clocks in at 181 pounds when dry.

Despite its weight, this wood pellet grill rolls around the patio with ease.

This is an eight-in-one grill, which means that you can smoke, bake, braise, and more. But this wood pellet grill also allows you to achieve instant direct or indirect heat over a 1,000 degree Fahrenheit flame.

This is an eight-in-one grill, so go ahead and smoke, bake, braise, roast, grill, barbecue, char-grill. I also like that this unit comes with a built-in flame broiler level. This feature allows you to cook with direct or indirect heat in a temperature range of 180-500 degrees Fahrenheit.

The shining feature is the digital PID system, which monitors the entire system for you. So all you have to do is load your hopper, dial in your desired temperature, and walk away.

This Pit Boss also has several extra features. These include a spacious side table, perfect for preparing sides, tool hooks, a bottle opener, and an open-cart design.

I like the wide, industrial-style wheels and the spacious open shelf, allowing me to store grilling supplies and additional wood pellets.

The Pit Boss 440 Deluxe Wood Pellet Grill may be a budget-friendly grill, but it has a large cooking area (518 square inches), eight-in-one cooking versatility, and shares many of the same features as higher-end Pit Boss grills. What’s not to love?

Why buy a Pit Boss grill?

Pit Boss has been manufacturing grills for a little over two decades. While Pit Boss manufactures a variety of grills including gas grills and charcoal units, they’ve built their reputation on their high-quality yet affordable wood pellet grills.

There are a few reasons to consider a Pitboss grill, including price, temperature control, and a minimal learning curve.

Price

Traeger Grills and Pit Boss have long been in competition with one another. Trager pellet grills can hold their own, but they are generally more expensive than Bit Boss units.

Traeger pellet grills start at around $600 and soar to $2,000 for premium models. On the other hand, most Pit Boss models start around $500 with premium models climbing to no more than around $900.

So if you’re looking to get more bang for your buck, Pit Boss may be the brand to look to.

Temperature Control

Temperature control is one of the most important features to consider when purchasing a wood pellet grill. If your wood pellet grill cannot lock in temperatures with a reasonable amount of accuracy, you’re in for a disastrous grilling session.

There are two factors that contribute to solid temperature control: insulation and PID temperature controller. With the exception of the Pit Boss vertical smoker, few others are double-walled.

The good news is that Pit Boss pellet smokers maintain their heat well and offer a tight seal, which locks in flavor and smoke. I also like that Pit Boss pellets operate on an intuitive PID controller, which monitors temperatures and self feeds additional fuel when necessary.

Minimal learning curve

What’s great about Pit Boss brand wood pellet grills are incredibly user-friendly. That’s because they run on an automated digital control system, which does virtually all the work for you.

All you have to do is plug in your wood pellet unit, fill the hopper with Pit Boss pellets, dial in your temperature, and walk away. The wood pellet grill essentially monitors itself.

So when temperatures fluctuate, the grill’s circuitry kicks into gear and cycles the auger until the right temperature is achieved. This means is the dictionary definition of “set it and forget it,” and that’s a big reason consumers love Pit Boss wood pellet units.

What features to look for in a Pit Boss grill

There are several features to consider when shopping for a Pit Boss model. These include type, size, price, and the additional features below.

Grill type

Pit Boss offers a full line of grills including wood pellet cookers, vertical smokers, propane and charcoal grills, and griddles. That said, they’ve built their reputation on their popular pellet grills.

In fact, Pit Boss was one of the top-selling wood pellet manufacturers in the US in 2024.

I will say this: if you’re looking for rich, woodfire flavor and want a unit that takes most of the labor and guesswork out of the cooking experience, you can’t go wrong with a Pit Boss classic pellet grill. It’s one of the best wood pellet grill options available.

Size

When it comes to grill size there’s a common misconception that bigger is better. Truth be told, you’d be surprised what you can accomplish on a budget-friendly single-burner gas grill.

With that said, there’s a simple formula you can use to determine the ideal grill size. Allot at least 72 square inches of cooking surface for each person. If you’re cooking for two, double that number, and so on.

Just as important, consider the size of your patio space. Pit Boss Austin XL 1000 Sq. In. Pellet Grill w/ Flame Broiler is a fantastic grill, but it is also more than 5’ wide. That’s a substantial footprint.

So if you have limited space, you may need to scale down – or even shop for a compact vertical outdoor cooking machine.

Cost

What’s great about Pit Boss grills is that they are quite budget-friendly. Most Pit Boss grills start around $500 with premium models climbing to no more than around $900.

So if you’re looking to get more bang for your buck, Pit Boss is a great brand to look at.

Material

Most Pit Boss grills are made from heavy-gauge steel and topped off with a powder-coated finish to give them all-weather protection. The beauty of Pit Boss grills is that they are heavy on metal and light on plastic. So Pit Boss pellet grills are as sleek as they are durable.

Temperature control

Temperature control is one of the most important factors to consider. The good news is that Pit Boss pellet grills offer solid temperature control because they run on a smart, PID system.

So when temperatures fluctuate, the grill’s circuitry kicks into gear and cycles the auger until the right temperature is achieved. This means that you can walk away knowing that your food is in good hands.

Temperature range

Pit Boss wood pellets also have a wide temperature range. Many units on this list allow you to choose from direct or indirect temperatures with the pull of a lever. So when cooking with pellets, you can achieve between 180-500 degrees Fahrenheit.

However, when using the grill’s open-flame capability, you’ll reach up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature.

What is the best Pit Boss pellet grill for you?

So what is the best Pit Boss classic grill for you? That ultimately depends on your budget, needs, and preferences. However, if I had to choose one standout unit, it’d be the Pit Boss Sportsman 820 Deluxe Pellet Grill.

This handsome eight-in-one unit allows you to smoke, bake, braise, roast, grill, barbecue, char-grill, and sear all on one machine.

The digital control board is another shining feature. This allows you to lock in temperatures and set times. Plus, this system works in tandem with the included meat probes, which allow you to measure your cooking progress.

In total, you get 849 square inches of cooking space, porcelain-coated cast-iron cooking grates, a meat probe, and a 21-pound hopper capacity.

Extras include a built-in bottle opener, a folding front shelf, and a removable stainless-steel side shelf, plus an additional bottom shelf.

If you’re looking for eight-in-one versatility and a system that locks in temperature and self-monitors, the Pit Boss Sportsman 820 Deluxe Pellet Grill may be the unit for you.
