What is ceramic cookware?

Unlike cast iron, stainless steel, or copper cookware, ceramic cookware comes with a nonstick coating. The ceramic finish is typically PTFE- and PFO-free and does not contain any toxic or heavy metals.

So the surface is naturally slick to reduce sticking and the need for butter or oil. Many ceramic nonstick cookware sets are metal utensil, oven, and dishwasher-safe, making them some of the most popular cookware sets on the market.

Why buy ceramic cookware?

There are several reasons to use ceramic cookware, which I’ll explain below.

Easy to clean

Even after several hours of soaking, stubborn food sometimes refuses to wash out of traditional stainless steel, aluminum, and copper pots and pans. But you can leave those clingy bits of leftover food in the past when you use ceramic pots for cooking.

Ceramic cookware sets are covered in a nonstick coating, so they’re easy to clean. At the same time, some non-stick ceramic cookware sets are dishwasher safe. Most clean up with a light sponge and mild dish soap.

They are oven safe

In general, most ceramic cookware can transition from the stovetop to the oven or broiler. This is convenient for finishing off a dish or keeping it warm while you finish cooking other foods.

They eliminate the need for oil and butter

Ceramic nonstick cookware is ideal for health-conscious cooks who are trying to reduce their fat intake. Because ceramic cookware has a non stick surface, you can dry cook without your food sticking. In other words, you don’t need to use oil, butter, or fat when cooking. So food is healthier.

Is ceramic cookware safe?

Ceramic cookware became popular when knowledge of the toxicity of Teflon became widespread. Unlike Teflon, ceramic coating cookware is PTFE- and PFO-free and does not release toxins even when accidentally overheated.

Studies regarding the safety of ceramic-coated pans are still relatively new. So we do not know conclusively whether it is harmful to ingest small particles of silicone oil.

We do, however, know that ceramic sets are a much safer alternative to Teflon. And when used properly, ceramic cookware is one of the safest non stick cookware options on the market.

How long does ceramic cookware last?

The answer to this question depends on how you treat your ceramic coating cookware set and the frequency with which you use it. On average, nonstick ceramic coatings last between six and nine months.

However, if you exclusively use silicone and plastic utensils with your non-stick ceramic skillet and pots, they should last between 12 and 18 months. You’ll also extend your lifespan when you wash ceramic non-stick pans by hand.

What features to look for in a ceramic cookware set

There are many features to consider when shopping for a ceramic cookware set. These include construction, size, cost, and the additional features listed below.

Construction

Although most ceramic coatings are essentially the same, there are many variations between what lies beneath the nonstick coating. Ceramic often covers aluminum, copper, and stainless steel.

Aluminum is the most affordable option, stainless steel is a fantastic choice for its durability, and cast iron is a fabulous heat conductor and highly durable; however, it is also the most expensive material of the group.

Number of pieces

Ceramic cookware sets are available in many sizes. If you’re a casual cook and only need to prepare for one or two, a set like the Vremi Ceramic Nonstick Cookware Set should be sufficient.

However, if you’re an experienced cook who likes to cook for your family and large groups, you’ll benefit from a set like the Duxtop Professional or the GreenLife Soft Grip 16-Piece Ceramic Non-Stick Cookware Set.

Cost

In general, smaller ceramic bakeware sets begin at $70, with larger sets rising to as high as $300. If you are a casual cook or only prepare meals for one or two, a small set like the Cuisinart Advantage Ceramica XT should give you everything you need and then some.

However, if you are an experienced cook who likes to entertain large groups, you may want to upgrade to a more extensive set like the GreenLife Soft Grip 16-Piece Ceramic Non-Stick Cookware Set.

Handle

Ceramic cookware sets typically come with either stainless steel or wood handles. Natural wood looks great. Stainless steel is sturdier than wood and won’t warm up, chip, or crack, even when submerged in water.

What is the best ceramic cookware set for you?

The answer to that ultimately depends on your budget, needs, and preferences. However, if I had to choose only one set, it’d be the Gotham Steel Pro Hard-Anodized 13-Piece Cookware Set.

[amazon box=”B078YWSNX4″ tracking_id=”ceramic-cookware09-20″]

Every piece in this ceramic pot set is made from a blend of anodized aluminum, Gotham steel titanium, and ceramic. This blend provides superior strength to all stainless-steel cookware sets.

You can stop reaching for the butter and oil because each piece is covered with a nonstick ceramic coating. So cooking is healthier – and food just slides off the nonstick surface.

I also like that each piece in this ceramic-coated cookware set comes with vented, shatter-resistant glass lids. This allows you to check out your cooking progress without lifting the lid.
