1. Bali Outdoors Wood Burning Fire Pit Grill Combo – Best Overall Choice #1

BALI OUTDOORS Wood Burning Fire Pit Backyard with Cooking Grill, 32in, Black, 24in

View on Amazon

The Bali Outdoors Wood Burning Fire Pit Grill Combo lands at the top of the list thanks to its sturdy steel construction, dual-purpose fire pit, and BBQ grill design.

There’s a lot to admire here. First off, it comes with a consumer-friendly price tag, which is surprising considering that it’s made from top-to-bottom powder-coated steel.

The outdoor fire grill is also perfectly sized. The fire bowl is 12” deep and has a 32” diameter. So there’s plenty of room for the whole family to gather.

I also like that it has an adjustable 18.7” circular grate, which you can bring up or down, depending on your needs. Swing it over the fire to cook. Swing it out of the way or detach it altogether if you’d rather have a cozy fire.

This fire pit grill is built like a tank, but it’s surprisingly lightweight. At only 27 pounds, you’ll have no trouble moving this unit around the yard or patio.

This outdoor fire pit is unique in that it has an additional grill grate system circling the fire bowl. This feature isn’t practical for cooking. However, it is a great place to drape wet clothing or just prop up your feet and chill. There’s an additional foot ring at the base of the fire bowl, too.

If you’re looking for sleek design, a consumer-friendly price tag, and a dual fire pit and BBQ grill in one package, check out the Bali Outdoors Wood Burning Fire Pit Grill Combo.

2. BioLite FirePit Outdoor Smokeless Fire Pit and Grill – Best Overall Choice #2

BioLite FirePit+ Outdoor Smokeless Wood & Charcoal Burning FirePit and Grill

Warm campfires draw you in. The trouble is that they create a lot of smoke, which chases you away and lingers in your hair and clothing. What if there was a way to have a campfire without all the smoke? There is, thanks to the BioLite FirePit Outdoor Smokeless Fire Pit and Grill.

The unit comes with an advanced airflow system mounted to the side of the grill. Here’s how it works: An integrated, USB chargeable fan blows fresh air across 51 jets, dramatically improving combustion by burning up the matter before it escapes the fire bowl.

So you can stop shuffling around the campfire as you try to escape the smoke. And unlike other fire pit grills, all four sides of this outdoor fire pit are covered in mesh. This gives you a bird’s-eye view into the fire show, no matter where you’re seated.

The cooking chamber holds up to four pieces of wood at once. If you’re not impressed, remember that this grill comes with an airflow system, so it requires less wood to produce a roaring flame.

Want to dial-up or down the flames? Just download the BioLite app and control the airflow system from your favorite mobile device.

The beauty is that this unit also moonlights as a BBQ grill. The fire pit’s dual fuel system allows you to cook with wood or charcoal simply by adjusting the base grates, giving you the experience of a smokeless grill.

If you love the rich smokey taste of food cooked over an open flame but could do without all the smoke, check out the BioLite FirePit Outdoor Smokeless Fire Pit and Grill.

3. Cast Master Dual Purpose Smokeless Fire Pit & Bonfire Grill

Cast Master Bon 2000 Dual Purpose Bonfire Pit - Smokeless Fire Pit & Campfire Grill - 3-in-1 Firepit, Wood & Charcoal Grill Rack, Grate -Cooking, Camping, Tailgating, Beach - Portable with Carry Case

View on Amazon

The Cast Master Dual Purpose Smokeless Fire Pit & Bonfire Grill earns solid points for its portability, sturdy stainless steel construction, and technology-free airflow system.

The first thing you’ll notice about this fire pit grill is the sleek stainless steel construction. The stainless steel has a chrome finish to it, so in addition to looking sharp, it’s also weather-resistant as well as rust- and corrosion-resistant.

I like that Cast Master has reimagined the traditional fire pit grill. See, the bottom of the fire bowl is lined with scallops. There’s also an elevated tier for fuel (wood or charcoal) on the inside. As a result, air flows through the bottom and rises to the fuel tray.

This reduces smoke and facilitates a cleaner, hotter fire with even distribution. The beauty is that you don’t need fans or gas to get the fire going. It’s all just intelligent engineering and science.

This unit also comes with a traditional stainless steel cooking grate and an additional mesh grate. The mesh grate is ideal for cooking kabobs or smaller foods that tend to slip through the cracks and nosedive into the flames.

If you’re looking for a sleek, technology-free design that’s efficient and much less smokey, check out the Cast Master Dual Purpose Smokeless Fire Pit & Bonfire Grill.

View on Amazon

The Pop-Up Fire Pit – Portable Fire Pit Grill is another one of my favorite fire pit grills.

This fire pit grill is fantastic for any BBQ situation, but it truly shines on the road. This unit sets up in under 30 seconds (without tools) and collapses into a compact, 24” long package that you can tuck away inside the included carrying case.

At only 16 pounds, this unit is ideal for road warriors. Despite its compact footprint, this grill offers 441 square inches of grate space, which is on par with many traditional propane grills.

The beauty of this wood-burning fire pit is that you can use it anywhere, even on wood decks. The fire bowl rises 24” off the ground, and beneath the base is a fire-resistant heat shield, which contains heat and debris.

This fire pit grill holds its own, literally. It can hold up to 75 pounds, so no matter what you’re cooking or how many people you’re cooking for, this grill is up for the task.

5. Walden Round Fire Pit Grill Rack

Walden Fire Pit Grate Round Premium Heavy Duty Steel Grate with Ember Catcher for Outdoor Fire Pits (29.5")

View on Amazon

The Walden Round Fire Pit Grill Rack is an ideal fire pit grill for anyone with a stone or brick backyard fire pit setup.

This unit is essentially an inverted basin, and you can use it in a couple of ways. If you want to increase airflow and produce a roaring campfire, place your charcoal or wood on top of the 36” rack.

If you want to use the rack as a cooking grate, start the fire below the 4” tall rack. Once the embers die down and the charcoal greys, drop a smaller set of grates on top of the rack and start cooking.

To call this fire pit cooking grate “heavy-duty” is an understatement. It’s made from a special carbon hardened steel which is 45 percent stronger than standard steel. While I don’t recommend it, you can drive a car over this fire pit grate (no exaggeration) without damaging it. It’s also powder-coated to give it all-weather, flame-resistant protection.

This fire pit cooking grate is 36” in diameter, which gives you plenty of room to cook for the entire family.

If you have an outdoor fire pit setup, want a more efficient burn and the ability to cook over the flames, check out the Walden Round Fire Pit Grill Rack.

Why buy a fire pit grill?

There are numerous reasons to invest in fire pit grills. Not only do they make cool nights cozy, they provide mood lighting, make conversations more enjoyable, and give you increased cooking flexibility, they also improve the aesthetics of your yard and patio space.

Dual-purpose technology

I love the convenience of cooking with propane. The trouble is that my patio grill is only suitable for one thing: cooking. That’s what makes fire pits/grills so wonderful.

Outdoor fire pits/grills serve two functions: They allow you to enjoy roaring campfires in the yard or on the patio. Plus, you can cook food on them.

It can frequently be used in no-burn zones

In general, anyone can enjoy cooking over an open flame thanks to outdoor fire pit grillers, regardless of where they live.

While many communities enforce burn laws, some (emphasis on some) allow you to enjoy an open flame when it’s fueled by propane. So apartment and condo dwellers are no longer excluded from the fun.

Note: Be sure to check with your HOA or apartment/condo association for rules and regulations. Not every community allows open burns, even if you’re using propane.

Mood lighting and ambiance

Fire pit grillers are surprisingly sleek and stylish. Most are made from stainless steel. Some have unique venting systems that look great from afar; others have a stylish spark screen; others look just as much at home on the patio as they do at the campground.

In short, a fire pit table/grill completes backyards and patio spaces and invites you to enjoy the area, regardless of the temperature or season.

What features to look for in a fire pit grill

There are several features to consider when shopping for fire pits/grills. These include design, fuel source, size, and the additional features below.

Design

Outdoor fire pit/grills come in a variety of designs. Some are made for life on the road, so they collapse into a compact package. Others have massive cooking areas, so you can host a roaring campfire party and then grill up delicious food once the flames die down.

There’s an outdoor fire pit/grill out there for homebodies, travelers, and everyone in between.

Fuel source

Outdoor space pit grills are typically fueled by three sources: charcoal, wood (or both), and propane. If you enjoy cooking over and gathering around an open flame but could do without smoke and messy ash, you’ll do best with a propane unit.

However, if you like the rich, smokey taste that only wood and charcoal bring, there are many units available.

Size and portability

Are you looking for a showpiece fire pit griller to complete your outdoor patio space? Something large enough to cook for the entire block? Or maybe you’re looking for a unit that’s lightweight and travels well? Indeed, there’s a unit out there for every lifestyle, budget, and preference.

Material

Large fire grills are typically made from heavy-duty stainless steel and powder-coated for all-weather protection. While budget-friendly units are available, they’re typically made from aluminum and will not last as long as stainless steel BBQ pits.

Safety

Backyard BBQ pits are designed with safety in mind. Most come with a spark screen and elevated legs. The screen eliminates flyaway ash and sparks, and the elevated legs put a safe distance between the flames and the patio.

What is the best fire pit grill for you?

So what is the best fire pit/grill for you? That ultimately depends on your budget, needs, and preferences. However, if I had to choose a single standout unit, it’d be the Bali Outdoors Wood Burning Fire Pit Grill Combo.

This unit earns high marks for its consumer-friendly price tag and durable stainless steel construction.

This unit is also perfectly sized. It has a 12” deep bowl and a 32” diameter cooking surface, so there’s plenty of room to cook on.

I also like that it has an adjustable 18.7” circular grate, which you can bring up or down, depending on your needs. Swing it over the fire to cook. Swing it out of the way or detach it altogether if you’d rather have a cozy fire.

This fire pit is unique in that it has an additional grill grate system circling the fire bowl. This feature isn’t practical for cooking. However, it is a great place to drape wet clothing or just prop up your feet and chill. There’s an additional foot ring at the base of the fire bowl, too.
