By Chris Johns •  Updated: 09/05/24 •  15 min read

Best George Foreman Grills

The first George Foreman grill hit the market in 1994, and, thanks to some quirky late-night infomercials and healthy qualities, it quickly became an overnight sensation.

Now, nearly 30 years later, George Foreman Grills remains one of the most popular indoor-outdoor grill brands on the market.

The reason George Foreman grills are so popular is that they’re easy to use, inexpensive, heat quickly (under 5 minutes), easy to clean, and can be used year-round.

They also do not produce smoke or use an open flame, so you can also use them in condos, apartments, boats, or anywhere open-flame grilling is prohibited.

There are many George Foreman grill models available. This guide will help you choose the right one for you.

The George Foreman 6-Serving Removable Plate Grill leads the pack thanks to its compact footprint, easy-to-clean design, and sizable cooking area.

At only 17” X 7” X 14” and 12.8 pounds, this compact electric grill is ideal for travelers or those with limited counter and cabinet space.

This grill gives you 100 square inches of cooking space for family cooking despite its compact size.

George Foreman grills have come a long way since they hit the market almost 30 years ago, and this electric grill is no exception. This unit comes with a 1.5” floating hinge to accommodate thick cuts of meat or large sandwiches.

Extras include a digital timer and adjustable temperature control with LED readouts, dishwasher-safe grill plates, and a drip tray for easy cleanup.

If you’re a health-conscious consumer, you’ll be happy to know that this George Foreman Grill is also tough on grease. The sloped design helps channel unwanted grease away from food, reducing excess fat by 50 percent.

2. George Foreman GGR50B Indoor Outdoor Grill – Best Overall Choice #2

View on Amazon

The George Foreman GGR50B Indoor Outdoor Grill is a handsome indoor outdoor electric grill that earns high marks for its low price tag and apartment-friendly design.

The first thing you’ll notice is that this indoor-outdoor grill sits on a removable tripod. The beauty of the design is that the stand removes in seconds, allowing you to transition from the patio to the countertop in no time.

If you like to cook for groups, you’ll enjoy the ample cooking space. That’s 240 square inches, enough room for 15 servings.

As with all the grills in this review, this one comes with thick, non-stick grates. These grates are removable and dishwasher safe. In addition, they’re effortless to clean because you never have to use oil or butter during cooking.

This indoor outdoor electric grill also heats up quickly. Thanks to the 1,600-watt heating element, you’ll reach peak temperature (around 450 degrees Fahrenheit) in three to five minutes.

If you’re looking for an affordable electric grill with ample cooking space or need a unit that performs just as well on the patio as it does in the kitchen, the George Foreman GGR50B may be the unit for you.

3. George Foreman Evolve Grill

George Foreman GRP4842MB Multi-Plate Evolve Grill, (Ceramic Grilling Plates, and Waffle Plates Included), Black

View on Amazon

The George Foreman Evolve Grill stands out for its high heat settings, low cost, and versatility.

This electric grill bakes, toasts, griddles, and, of course, grills. That’s because it comes with non-stick waffle plates and ceramic grilling plates. That provides a heck of a lot of cooking flexibility.

If you need a little extra searing power for a tasty crust on steak and burgers, this is the electric grill to help you do it.

By pressing the “sear” button on the multi-plate Evolve grill, the unit will raise the temperature to 500 degrees Fahrenheit for 60 seconds, then return it to the previously set temperature.

If you have limited kitchen space, you’ll like that this George Foreman Grill is only 11” X 16.25” X 14.1” and only weighs six pounds.

If you’re looking for high searing power and like having the option to make steaks, burgers, waffles, paninis, check out the George Foreman Evolve Grill.

4. George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor Electric Grill

George Foreman 12-Serving Indoor/Outdoor Rectangular Electric Grill, Red, GFO201R

View on Amazon

The George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor Electric Grill is not only one of the most affordable on the list, but it also has one of the largest cooking areas.

This George Forman grill comes with 200 square inches of cooking space – that’s enough room for 12 servings.

If you’re an apartment dweller or live in a community with an open-flame ban, this grill will serve you well.

This unit sits on a 3.5’ removable stand, which comes apart in seconds. This allows you to transition from the patio to the kitchen in no time.

This grill is also incredibly easy to clean. The patented slope grids channel excess fat and grit away from the grates and into the removable grease tray. And because the grill plates are made with a non-stick coating, they clean up nicely in the dishwasher.

If you’re looking for a large cooking area and want a unit that allows you to cook on the patio and inside the house, check out the George Foreman Indoor/Outdoor Electric Grill.

5. George Foreman Classic 36-Inch Grill

George Foreman GR10WSP1 36-Inch Grill

View on Amazon

The George Foreman Classic 36-Inch Grill earns points for its compact footprint, ample cooking surface, and no-nonsense design.

If you like to keep things simple, this grill is as simple as they come. But that doesn’t make it any less effective.

This unit comes with a 36” cooking surface and double non-stick grill plates, which clean up nicely when you use the included sponge.

One downside is that you cannot remove the ceramic plates and toss them in the dishwasher. But at this price point, I don’t see that as a significant setback.

Again, this is a base-model, so it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of a higher-end George Foreman grill.

What you do get is Foreman’s signature patented slope design, which channels grease into a removable drip tray.

This system eliminates up to 42 percent of unwanted grease from ¼ pound of ground chuck. And since the grates resist sticking, you don’t even have to use butter or oil when cooking.

If you’re looking for an affordable plate electric grill that is easy to use and delivers consistent results, check out the George Foreman Classic 36-Inch Grill.

6. George Foreman Digital Family Size Smokeless Grill

George Foreman Family Size (4-6 Servings), GRD6090B Smokeless-Digital Smart Select, Stainless Steel

View on Amazon

The George Foreman Digital Family Size Smokeless Grill is one of my favorite models in the George Foreman line.

This plate grill features a 90 square inch removable dishwasher safe plate and a drip pan. So cleanup is a breeze—no scrubbing or soaking overnight necessary.

I also like the sleek, stainless steel exterior. Extra features include a front-mounted, touch-sensitive control panel. Here, you can set times and dial in your optimum temperature control.

While this smokeless grill won’t produce searing hot temperatures, it quickly reaches its peak temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. And it will cook burgers in less than six minutes, which is more than sufficient.

As with other models, this one comes with a patented slope grill plate that channels unwanted grit and grease into a removable drip pan.

I also like the boxy design and sturdy exterior for a couple of reasons. First, it just plain looks cool. Second, it stows vertically. And at only 15.55” X 7.95” X 13.7”, this George Foreman Grill tucks away into kitchen cabinets nicely.

If you’re looking for a sleek design and need enough grill space to cook for six people, check out the George Foreman Digital Family Size Smokeless Grill.

7. George Foreman Rapid Grill

George Foreman Rapid Grill Series, 5-Serving Removable Plate Electric Indoor Grill and Panini Press, Black, RPGV3801BK

View on Amazon

The George Foreman Rapid Grill is another indoor grill that stands out for its ample cooking space, affordable price tag, and no-nonsense design.

This grill is a lot like the George Foreman Classic 36-Inch Grill, but with one significant advantage: It has removable dishwasher-safe plates that have a ceramic coating. This keeps food from sticking and minimizes cleanup.

Another nice feature is that the removable plates are sloped. This helps channel excess fat into the removable drip tray and away from your food.

I also like the locking lid and the boxy design, which allow you to store this grill vertically. And at only 6.14” X 15.67” X 13.94”, you’ll have no trouble storing this unit, even if you have limited cabinet space.

This unit is straightforward to use. Just plug it in, dial in your temperature setting, close the lid and wait for the indicator light to turn green.

If you’re looking for a simple, easy-to-clean George Foreman Grill with an ample cooking surface, check out the George Foreman Rapid Grill.

8. George Foreman 5-Serving Removable Plate Grill and Panini Press

George Foreman 5-Serving Removable Plate Grill and Panini Press, Platinum, GRP472P

View on Amazon

The George Foreman 5-Serving Removable Plate Grill and Panini Press is another fantastic grill.

It provides 72 square inches of cooking space, enough room to prepare five servings at once.

I also like that Foreman Grills upgraded the removable grill plates with a durable, non-stick coating. As a result, the plates are now five times more durable, stain- and fade-resistant, and free of harmful PTFE and PFOAs.

Cleanup is a breeze, too. That’s partially due to the non-stick grates but also because the plates are sloped. This design channels excess fat into the removable drip tray for easy cleanup.

This grill also heats quickly. Just plug it in, dial in your temperature, and wait five minutes for the indicator light to turn green. Now you’re ready to cook.

If you’re looking for an affordable grill that provides consistent heat output, quick heating, and low maintenance, check out the George Foreman 5-Serving Removable Plate Grill and Panini Press.

9. George Foreman GRP0004B 5-Serving Removable Plate Grill

George Foreman 5-Serving Removable Plate Electric Indoor Grill and Panini Press, Black, GRP0004B

View on Amazon

The George Foreman GRP0004B 5-Serving Removable Plate Grill is another great George Foreman.

This unit is 17.25” X 12.05” X 6.22” and only weighs four pounds, so it’s ready for the road and also ideal for people with limited storage space.

Another perk is that the grill plates come with a non-stick coating, so they’re easy to clean. Plus, you don’t even need to use oil or butter.

This is a simple, no-frills grill, but it heats quickly (in under 5 minutes), provides space for five servings, and also has a floating hinge.

The hinged lid allows you 1.5” inches of vertical wiggle room, so you can grill thick chicken breast or paninis and still close the lid.

The George Foreman GRP0004B may be one of the most affordable units on the list, but it’s a performer that cleans easily and has plenty of cooking area.

10. George Foreman 2-Serving Classic Grill

George Foreman GR0040B 2-Serving Classic Plate Grill, Black

View on Amazon

The George Foreman 2-Serving Classic Grill is the unit that started it all. It’s also the most compact and affordable grill on the list.

So here’s what you get with the 2 serving classic plate grill: an 8” x 4.2” X 9” grill that weighs only 2.5 pounds. It’s a small grill package, but there’s still plenty of room for two healthy servings.

Unfortunately, the grill plates don’t detach, but they come with a non-stick surface, so they clean up nicely.

Like all George Foreman grills, this grill features a sloped design, which removes up to 42 percent of fat.

If you like simplicity and an ultra-low price tag, check out the George Foreman 2-Serving Classic Grill. It has been around for nearly 30 years – and I anticipate that it’ll be around much longer.

Why buy a George Foreman grill?

George Foreman grills made the indoor grill popular back in 1994. Nearly 30 years on, they continue to dominate the market thanks to their affordable price, quick heat time, dishwasher safe plates, and health-conscious design.

Price

In terms of price, George Forman grills have the edge over traditional gas or charcoal grills. An inexpensive propane unit costs as little as $200 and as much as $400. The most expensive grill in this review costs half the price of the cheapest propane unit.

As you’ll see, these grills have some serious advantages over other electric grills, too.

Health-Conscious Design

George Foreman Grills are tough on grease and fat. Unlike other electric grills, they come with sloped plates and a lid that presses meat. As a result, fat is squeezed out and channeled into a convenient drip tray—the result: 50 percent less fat and a quick, guilt-free meal.

Quick Heat Time

The beauty of George Foreman grills is that they heat up in three to five minutes. What’s even more surprising is that Foreman grills still pack a serious punch. Some grills are capable of putting out a whopping 500 degrees Fahrenheit of heat!

Versatility

George Foreman grills run on electricity. So they don’t require charcoal or propane, produce smoke, or use an open flame. That’s a big reason apartment, and condo dwellers love them. They can be used on the patio or inside the kitchen without violating open-flame bans.

Year-Round Use

Another crowning feature of these grills is that they can be used as an indoor or outdoor grill.

Why? Because they don’t use an open flame.

Plus, several units come with an easy-to-remove stand, which allows you to use them on the patio just like a traditional grill.

Easy Cleanup

George Foreman electric grills are also incredibly easy to clean for a couple of reasons. First, most units come with removable plates that are ceramic coated. This coating keeps food from sticking (no oil or butter necessary).

A bonus is that you can take the removable plates and toss them in the dishwasher once you’re done cooking!

What features to look for in a George Foreman grill

There are several factors to consider when shopping for an electric grill. The most important being temperature output, size, cleanup, and the additional features listed here.

Design

The beauty of George Foreman grills is that they all share two key design features: a sloped, non-stick grilling surface and a locking lid. Because of this, fat is squeezed out of meat and channeled into a drip tray. The result: 50 percent less fat and easy cleanup.

Yet Foreman food grills come in a variety of styles. Some have LED controls, which allow you to set times and temperatures. Others (most) have a removable plate that you can throw in the dishwasher. One even has a searing feature and can reach 500 degrees Fahrenheit!

As you shop, consider your needs and budget. There’s a cooking grill out there for everyone.

Servings

Foreman electric grills come in a variety of sizes. Even smaller models like the George Foreman 6-Serving Removable Plate Grill provide 100 square inches to cook on, enough for six servings.

However, if you like to entertain large groups, the GGR50B may be the unit for you. The GGR50B provides 250 square inches of cooking area – that’s enough for 15 servings!

Weight

Another shining feature of these grills is that they are all relatively lightweight, so they stow and travel nicely. The lightest of the bunch weighs in at six pounds. The heaviest clocks in at only 21 pounds.

Accessories

Because George Foreman grills come with non-stick grates and run on electricity, they don’t require many accessories.

However, I recommend purchasing a reusable non-scratching scrubber to remove stubborn grease and grit from the grill plates. I also suggest buying a heat-resistant, no-scratch spatula.

What is the best George Foreman grill for you?

So what’s the best George Foreman electric grill on the market? That ultimately depends on your budget and needs. However, if I had to choose a standout unit, it’d be the George Foreman 6-Serving Removable Plate Grill.

This unit stands out for its compact footprint, easy-clean design, and ample cooking area.

At only 17” X 7” X 14” and 12.8 pounds, this unit travels and stows nicely. Despite its small size, you still get 100 square inches of cooking surface.

I also like the 1.5” floating hinge. This feature lifts the lid, transforming it into a panini press.

Extras include a digital timer and adjustable temperature control with LED readouts, dishwasher-safe grill plates, and a drip tray for easy cleanup.

If you’re looking for a fairly-priced indoor electric grill and panini press that is large enough for the entire family, check out the George Foreman 6-Serving Removable Plate Grill.
