Best Portable Pellet Grill

Portable pellet grills are one of my favorite types of portable grills. A portable pellet grill allows you to take delicious wood-smoked food flavor with you.

Grilling and smoking over wood is a time-honored experience for any good griller, and these portable pellet grills allow you to take that tradition with you anywhere.

Not only are these portable pellet smoker grills convenient, but they’re also surprisingly easy to use as well. Just fill the hopper, plug it in, set the temperature, and you’re good to go.

There’s plenty of portable pellet grills to choose from and this guide will help you select the best one for your needs.

The Best Portable Pellet Grills for 2024

1. Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett Pellet Grill – WiFi Enabled – Best Overall Choice #1

Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett Pellet Grill – WiFi Enabled

View on Amazon

If you’re looking for an affordable portable pellet grill that travels easily and looks like a pageant-winner but doesn’t compromise on quality and cooking power, check out Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett Pellet Grill.

The first thing that will catch your eye is the design. Green Mountain ditches the usual all-matte black finish and clunky design that many manufacturers use.

Instead, you find a sleek, polished silver steel hood and a fold-up leg design that looks sharp and makes stowing this 57-pound grill easy.

If you’re a tailgater, you may have more luck lifting this grill into the back of your truck or hoisting it onto a table. This Green Mountain grill is short.

There’s a lot to admire about this Green Mountain grill. For one, it is far more cost-effective than most pellet grills. Yet, when you lift the metal hood on this unit, you can feel the material quality.

I also like that this unit doesn’t require a bundle of extra smoker accessories to work on the road. This grill comes with a standard 110v AC plug option, an auto plug for cigarette lighters, and a 12v battery that uses micro alligator jumper clips.

For a more efficient cooking experience, I suggest keeping your eight-pound pellet hopper full. This is a gravity-fed machine, so the more wood pellets you have at the ready, the better it’s going to self-feed.

If you like to mingle while you grill, you’ll appreciate the freedom the Sense-Mater add-on gives you. This system includes a thermal sensor and meat probe; these enable you to monitor your cooking progress through your phone.

If you want a road-ready pellet grill that is handsome, affordable, and astonishingly well-built, considering the price, check out the Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett Pellet Grill.

This mini pellet grill features 256 square inches of cooking area and a table-top design that comes in a lightweight and compact grilling package. Road-warriors will like that this grill runs on standard power or plugs directly into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter.

This 52-pound grill emphasizes portability, yet it grills like larger, far more expensive patio grills. Country Smokers Tabletop Pellet Grill includes a searing zone and sturdy, removable, easy-to-clean grates. Tabletop grills are one of my favorite types of pellet grills.

If you’re a better cook than you are a handyman, you’ll love that this unit is essentially ready upon arrival. All you have to do is screw in the handle and legs, fill up your pellet feeder, and fire your unit up.

This all-metal unit is surprisingly well-built, especially when you consider the price. Every piece on this portable pellet grill is coated with heat and rust-resistant paint.

10. Traeger Tailgater Pellet Grill

Traeger Tailgater Pellet Grill

View on Traeger Grills

Portable pellet smokers like the Traeger Tailgater Pellet Grill were designed to travel. Thanks to its lightweight, collapsible design, this grill lives up to its name.

This grill features a short, lightweight barrel top smaller than traditional standing grills yet large enough to cook for a small group. In total, you get 300 square inches of cooking surface area, which is generous considering that this is a portable grill.

When fully set up, the grill sits just below the waistline, so if you’re ergonomically challenged, you might be better off folding up the legs and grilling from the back of your tailgate. This grill is sturdy, but it’s certainly not a back-breaker. At only 60 pounds, I had no problem lifting this unit on my own.

Crack the lid, and you’ll find easy-to-clean porcelain-coated grates and 300 square inches of cooking space. Additional features include an easy-to-use interface that locks in a tight temperature range and a built-in meat probe that allows you to monitor your food without lifting the lid.

This is a six-in-one grill, but it truly excels as a portable smoker. It is lightweight yet sturdy and easy to use.

If you’re looking for a portable pellet smoker that can pull double-duty, the Traeger Tailgater Pellet Grill may be a good option. It is small enough to travel but sufficient for balcony grillers with limited space.

Pit Boss Tailgater Wood Pellet Grill

View on Pit Boss

Since we’re talking about portable wood pellet grills, let’s take a look at the Pit Boss Tailgater Wood Pellet Grill.

The two-tone copper and black finish make this portable wood pellet grill attractive – yet this unit does not shine on looks alone.

This portable grill features 340 square inches of cooking surface and a collapsible design with rolling wheels. The grill is constructed from 16 gauge (1.5 mm) steel, so it is lightweight without compromising durability.

Additional features include a five-pound hopper, an auto-start, a shut-off feature, and a digital control center with an LED read-out.

A nice add-on is the lid-mounted temperature gauge. It’s a simple extra, but having the ability to monitor and compare temperature between an analog and digital source at the same time ensures dead-accurate heat control.

The Pit Boss Tailgater Wood Pellet Grill has a few advantages when comparing it to other portable pellet smokers. First, the legs are much sturdier than those used on other portable units. This unit also comes out ahead because it has two meat probes and a rear exhaust convection system that ensures the desired temperature.

If you’re looking for a powerful, portable pellet smoker, the Pit Boss Tailgater Wood Pellet Grill may be a good choice.

12. Traeger Ironwood 650 Pellet Grill

Traeger Ironwood 650 Pellet Grill

View on Traeger Grills

The Traeger Ironwood 650 Pellet Grill is one of the pricier units on my list, but if you’re looking to make a sensible investment, this grill will reward you for it.

This grill features a classic barrel-top design and top-to-bottom steel construction, making this grill handsome and sturdy. This is a Traeger, so you can rest assured that it comes with a bundle of extras.

These include WiFIRE technology that offers heat control from afar and a built-in pellet sensor, which monitors your pellet hopper and displays the results through your mobile device.

Alexa users will also like having the flexibility to adjust temperatures, set timers, and create alerts by using simple voice commands.

The Traeger Ironwood 650 Pellet Grill recently underwent a series of upgrades that noticeably improved my cooking experience. The new and improved D2 drivetrain starts quicker, heats up faster, and puts out better quality smoke. This feature is enhanced by the included digital meat probes, ensuring your food is cooked to perfection every time.

If you’re looking for durability, this unit delivers. It clocks in at just shy of 150 pounds, and you can feel the quality in the weight. It features double side-wall insulation, which provides precise temperature control.

Additional features include auto-ignition and an industrial-strength fan that effectively stokes your flames and circulates heat and smoke around your food.

There’s been a lot of hype around the Traeger brand, and after using the Traeger Ironwood 650 Pellet Grill, I can confirm that it is worthy of the fanfare. It is well-constructed, technology-packed, and produces consistent heat output and perfectly cooked food every time I use it.

If you’re looking for portability, cooking versatility, a moderate price tag, and don’t want to compromise on extra technology or good looks, you’re going to like the Grilla Grills Chimp Wood Pellet Grill.

This is a portable grill, but at 90 pounds, it certainly isn’t light. Yet, with a bit of teamwork, you’ll have no problem toting this grill around. And when you consider what this portable pellet grill does, you’ll quickly forget the extra weight.

This outdoor cooking grill features a new WiFi-enabled control board, which allows you to start your grill, stop it, monitor your temperature range, and set meat probe and grill alarms from the convenience of your mobile device.

Additional upgrades include Pro Smoke and PID modes, so depending on your desired flavor profile, you can either maximize smoke by increasing the temperature range variance of the grill or lock in precise temperatures so you can “set it and forget it.”

Those who like steakhouse sears and the ability to cook low and slow will find that the Grilla Grills Chimp Wood Pellet Grill accomplishes both options with ease.

Extra features include a 15-pound hopper that holds plenty of hardwood pellets, auto-ignition, durable stainless steel material grates, a flare-up eliminating blower fan that provides convection-style heating in the cooking chamber, and a digital electric temperature control panel.

This all-stainless-steel grill is portable yet handsome enough to pull double-duty: I’d happily use this as a primary home grill. It has ample cooking space(460 square inches).

There’s a lot to love about Grilla Grills Chimp Wood Pellet Grill. Not only is it affordable, but it’s also built with care and quality craftsmanship that Grilla puts into their pellet grills.

It also provides cooking flexibility that comes in a stainless-steel package and doesn’t skimp on technology extras.

Also included are digital meat probes, auto-ignition, and an industrial-strength fan that effectively stokes your flames and circulates heat and smoke around your food.

Traeger Grills makes quality grills, and this portable pellet smoker is no exception. The Traeger Pro 575 Wood Pellet Grill is well-constructed, technology-packed, and produces consistent heat output and perfectly cooked food every time I use it.

Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi 24

View on Camp Chef

There’s been a lot of hype around the Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi 24, and the enthusiasm has merit.

This portable pellet grill features an 800 square inch cooking space, a massive 22-pound wood pellets hopper, and plenty of extras. This grill is equipped with a new PID and WiFi-enabled controller, which allows you to change temperature range settings, alter smoke levels, set timers, and receive food-monitoring notifications.

Thanks to this technology, this is truly a set-it-and-forget-it grill that locks in heat and keeps it between +/- 5 degrees Fahrenheit of your setting. Impressive.

Extras include a color screen controller, four stainless steel meat probes, an efficient wood pellets hopper, and an ash cleanout system. Also included is a bottom utility shelf, perfect for storing sides and cooking utensils, and a generous three-year warranty.

This Camp Chef gets extra points for the ash cleanout system. Out of all the wood pellet grills I’ve had to clean, this one is, by far, the easiest to manage.

I also like that this wood pellet grill is designed to accommodate add-ons like the sidekick burner (sold separately), which converts your side table and makes it an ideal spot to prepare sides and sauces. I also like the direct flame slider rod technology, which allows me to achieve perfect steakhouse sears like I’m able to get on charcoal grills.

The Camp Chef Woodwind WiFi 24 is a feature-packed grilling machine that looks great, locks in temperatures, and makes food management a breeze.

What is the best portable pellet grill for you?

So what is the best portable pellet smoker? That depends on your budget and preferences, but if you’re looking for proper mobility, sleek design, consistency, and an affordable price tag, I recommend Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett Pellet Grill.

You’ll be charmed by the sleek, polished silver steel hood, but this pellet grill doesn’t rely on its good looks to get the job done. This grill is lightweight (57 pounds) but solid. You’ll feel the build quality when you lift the hood.

I also like that this grill comes road-ready right out of the box. You don’t have to order any adaptors because Green Mountain includes three power options: a standard 110v AC plug option, an auto plug for cigarette lighters, and a 12v battery that uses micro alligator jumper clips.

The unit is also WiFi-ready and allows you to link your phone to the grill’s Sense-Mater. Once you’re hooked up, you can monitor your cooking progress through your phone.

This grill is built for the road, but it looks and cooks like many far more expensive patio grills. If you’re looking for a grill that can pull double-duty at home and on the road, check out the Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett Pellet Grill.

I hope you enjoyed my list of the best portable pellet grills.

Happy grilling!
